Fabric Behaves Differently Along and Across the Weave

Cloth looks flat and uniform. It is neither, and the difference governs almost everything it does.

Woven fabric is two sets of threads crossing each other, and that simple fact makes it behave in three distinct ways depending on which direction you pull. Along the length it is firm and gives almost nothing. Across the width it gives a little more. But pull diagonally, at an angle across both sets of threads, and the whole structure suddenly stretches and drapes and behaves like a completely different cloth. Nothing has changed about the material. Only the direction of the demand has changed, and the cloth answers each direction with a different personality entirely.

This is why identical pieces cut in different orientations from the same length can hang in completely different ways, and why a garment that fits beautifully can be quietly ruined by a piece that was cut at the wrong angle. The fabric is not misbehaving. It is doing precisely what its structure requires. What is disconcerting for newcomers is that the surface gives you very few clues. You cannot see direction the way you can see grain in a board. You have to test it, and testing it is a matter of the hands.

Knitted cloth is different again, because it is not a grid of crossings but a structure of interlocking loops, and loops can move. That is why knitted things stretch in a way woven things never will and why they recover, or fail to, in ways that depend on the fibre. Learning to feel the difference between a cloth that will forgive a bit of tension and one that will hold a stretch forever is one of those pieces of knowledge that resists description and arrives entirely through handling. Nobody can hand it to you in words. You acquire it by touching a great deal of cloth over a long period and gradually noticing that your fingers have started answering the question before you have consciously asked it.
